In the world of IT projects, a Scrum Master may often hear comments such as, “A Scrum Master doesn’t really do much,” or “An Agile team manages itself, so there’s no need for one.” While it’s true that a Scrum team is meant to be self-organizing, it’s the Scrum Master who defines and maintains the framework that enables the team to grow, collaborate effectively, and deliver continuous value.
The Scrum Master is often the first to arrive on an Agile project, setting the stage and laying the groundwork for the team’s success.
He takes the time to get to know each team member and introduce his role to them. He firmly believes that the success of a project is closely tied to the success of each individual in their role — their responsibilities, commitments, the trust they place in their teammates, and their attitude toward one another. This is why the guidance and coaching provided by the Scrum Master are so essential. It’s a true change management process, aimed at embedding the Agile mindset into everyone’s daily habits to ensure strong team cohesion.
He organizes and structures the team’s daily workflow

The Scrum Master is there to protect the team and prevent any external interference that could compromise the smooth progress of the sprints.
Indeed, the Scrum Master supports the Product Owner and functional teams when significant changes arise in project requirements, helping to smooth the transition. He also manages the various requests from team members that could potentially slow down sprint progress — assessing their relevance, prioritizing them effectively, or handling them directly to keep the team focused and productive.
He is the facilitator
He builds the bridges that connect the team to the outside world, fostering collaboration and alignment with neighboring teams and stakeholders.
The Scrum Master focuses on building connections with the surrounding teams and stakeholders that his team may need to collaborate with. He knows how to anticipate needs and prepare the ground to ensure smooth coordination and project success.
He energizes and motivates the team
It’s natural for a project to fall into routine over time, but that’s exactly where the Scrum Master steps in — constantly seeking innovation and continuous improvement to keep the team’s curiosity and engagement alive. He rekindles motivation by ensuring everyone remains actively involved and invested in the tasks and goals entrusted to them.

To sum up: when everything runs smoothly in a project, it may seem like the Scrum Master is no longer essential — but in reality, it’s because he was essential that things are going so well. He works behind the scenes to let his team shine and to ensure the Agile framework stays strong and effective.
A great Scrum Master is everywhere the team needs him to be. !
