At IRIZ Consulting, we have been supporting leading organisations in their Pega projects since 2013. Over the years, we have found that a good command of Pega vocabulary is essential for project success, effective communication between business and IT teams, and efficient certification preparation.
This glossary brings together the 30 indispensable terms of the Pega ecosystem, explained clearly by our experts.
A
Application (Pega)
A Pega application is a set of rules, data and processes configured on the Pega platform to address a specific business need. It is built in a modular way and can evolve without complete rewriting thanks to Pega’s low-code architecture.
Center-out™ Architecture
Center-out™ architecture is Pega’s fundamental architectural model. Unlike traditional “inside-out” (system-driven) or “outside-in” (channel-driven) architectures, Center-out places business rules at the centre, independent of delivery channels and backend systems. This allows processes to be modified without touching user interfaces or legacy systems.
Agentic AI
Agentic AI in Pega refers to intelligent agents capable of acting autonomously to accomplish complex tasks without constant human intervention. Pega integrates AI agents capable of processing cases, interacting with external systems and making real-time decisions within defined workflows.
B
Blueprint™ (Pega GenAI Blueprint)
Pega Blueprint™ is an application design tool powered by generative artificial intelligence. It allows a business need to be described in natural language and automatically generates a first version of the associated workflows, data and business rules. What used to require several weeks of architectural design can now be initiated in just a few hours.
Business Architect (BA)
The Business Architect is a key role in Pega projects. They bridge the gap between business and technical teams. They design processes, write User Stories and configure the functional aspects of the application in Pega. The official certification is called Pega Certified Business Architect (PCBA).
BPM (Business Process Management)
BPM refers to the set of methods and tools for modelling, automating, executing and improving an organisation’s processes. Pega is one of the world’s most recognised BPM platforms, notably for its ability to combine BPM, CRM and AI-powered decision-making in a single platform.
C
Case
A case is the central unit of work in Pega. It represents an instance of a business process — for example, a retirement request, a customer complaint or an order. Each case follows a defined lifecycle (statuses, stages, actions) and can be processed by different actors.
Case Management
Case Management is the end-to-end management of cases in Pega. It enables the orchestration of complex, non-linear processes involving multiple actors and systems. This is one of Pega’s major strengths, particularly in banking, insurance and the public sector.
Case Type
A case type is the template for a business case in Pega. It defines the lifecycle, stages, rules and data associated with a type of case. For example, “Retirement Request” or “Customer Complaint” are case types.
Pega Certification
Pega offers several official certifications to validate platform skills:
- PCBA — Pega Certified Business Architect
- PCSA — Pega Certified System Architect
- PCSSA — Pega Certified Senior System Architect
- PCCSD — Pega Certified Customer Service Developer
Exams are administered by PearsonVue, at an exam centre or remotely.
